What are Cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of data sent from a website and stored in a user’s web browser while the user is browsing that website. They contain a certain amount of information and a particular timestamp.
How many cookies that are set when surfing to a site varies very much. Some sites do not use cookies at all, but the vast majority do, among other things, to give visitors access to various functions.
According to the Electronic Communications Act SFS 2003:389, 25 July 2003, everyone who visits a website with cookies must receive information on the website containing cookies, what these cookies are used for and how cookies can be avoided. Since July 1, 2011 the user must consent to the use of cookies.

There are two types of cookies

  • The first type, called a permanent cookie saves a file that remains on your computer. It has an expiration date, and when it has expired the cookie is deleted automatically when you return to the site that created it. It is used for example to adapt a website to the visitor’s preferences, choices and interests, for functions that tell you what is new since you last visited the site, and for statistical monitoring. They will disappear earlier if the visitor chooses to clear the cookies from the browser.
  • The second type is called a session cookie. During the time that a visitor is browsing a web page, it is temporarily stored in your computer’s memory. Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser.

First party cookie

There is a rule that links each cookie to the domain that created it. When the site that the visitor surfs to sets cookies, it is called first-party cookie.

Third party Cookies

Some functions may result in a cookie is sent to your computer by a third party. For example, to collect information for advertising and customized content, web statistics, if you are viewing or listening to any embedded audio or video content, cookies may be transferred from the location where it’s embedded content is stored. Likewise, if you share any content on this site through social networks (eg, by clicking on the Facebook “Like” or “Tweet” button) cookies can be sent from these websites. We do not control the settings of these cookies, please visit the web sites of these third party cookies for more information about their cookies and how to manage them. In many browsers, you can choose to disable third party cookies.

Flash cookies are a technical construction similar to cookies. Almost all browsers have a Flash player which displays Flash presentations. A well-known example of Flash presentation is the video player on the video site YouTube. (Flash cookies are not only associated with YouTube, but applies to all sites that use Flash cookies).

A Flash cookie can be used to store your preferences such as volume. The difference between ordinary cookies and Flash cookies include that when you as a user configures the cookie handling in your browser just regular cookies are covered, Flash cookies are not. A Flash cookie also is much larger than a regular cookie and therefore take up more space on your hard drive. A Flash cookie also lack time constraints. They remain until someone deletes them. Cookies set by Flash does not comply the settings you made in your browser.
